Master’s in Education Programs in Tennessee

According to the Tennessee Department of Education, more than 27,000 of Tennessee’s approximately 68,000 teachers had master’s degrees in education in 2010. The department also states that the average salary of a licensed teacher in the state is just over $47,800. Although these numbers don’t place Tennessee at the top of the nation for either number of teachers with master’s degrees in education or pay, the state of education in Tennessee is changing. In 2011, for example, Tennessee won a national Race to the Top education grant, a program which encourages innovation and achievement in school systems. Tennessee school districts would likely look favorably on teachers who have completed master’s degrees in education.

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville offers a number of Master of Education programs for teachers wishing to attain excellence in several disciplines. Teachers can obtain master’s degrees in science, reading and social studies education, among others. The university’s other branches also offer Master of Education programs. At their Chattanooga campus, students can enjoy the “Scenic City,” with its rich Native American and Civil War history. Social studies education teachers may especially enjoy experiencing Chattanooga. At Belmont University in Nashville, teachers can earn a master’s degree in education while enjoying the home of country music. Belmont’s program allows teacher’s to customize their degrees by taking the classes they feel will help them most.
