In March of 2011, the United States Department of Education awarded a little over $8 million to the state of Massachusetts to help it rebuild some of its struggling education departments. Obtaining an add-on certificate in one of Massachusetts’ teacher shortage areas can help Massachusetts teachers avoid layoffs or be eligible for new job opportunities as changes are implemented to improve schools districts. Areas of teacher demand in Massachusetts include math, science and foreign languages.

Schools Offering Teaching Certificates in Massachusetts

Anna Maria College offers both add-on and advanced certificates. Advanced certificates are in English Language Arts and Special Education. Add-on certificates from the college allow teachers to join the state’s nearly 13,500 preschool teachers and 8,700 elementary special education teachers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Cambridge College offers a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Educational Leadership. The certificate, which is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education, prepares teachers for administrative roles and offers professional development for current administrators. Massachusetts had almost 6,300 elementary and secondary administrators in May 2010, according to BLS. Hebrew College educates teachers in Jewish education and includes certificates in early childhood education, Jewish informal education, and Hebrew language teaching, among others.
