Although some Indiana schools are performing adequately with regard to annual tests, many are not. In 2011, for example, only 51 percent of schools met No Child Left Behind’s adequate yearly progress. While 68 percent of elementary schools earned this achievement, only 34 percent of middle schools and 20 percent of high schools met AYP for 2011. In response, the state has recently initiated an innovation fund of $5 million to help improve some of these problems. Indiana schools can compete for this grant, and the most innovative idea wins. Teachers can earn add-on certificates in Indiana teacher shortage areas to improve their chances of finding employment. Indiana’s teacher shortage areas for 2011-2012 include journalism, math, reading, social studies, and English as a New Language (ENL).
