Because of increasing school enrollments, Florida will need to hire new teachers in all disciplines in the next 10 years. According to the Florida Department of Education, the state will probably increase teacher hiring by 19 percent from 2006 to 2016. This means that there will be about 17,000 to 23,500 teacher positions available each year. According to the U.S. Department of Education, most of those positions are special education positions, with specialists needed in areas such as autism, emotional handicaps, intellectual disabilities, and visual impairments. In the 2012-2013 school year, Florida projects that it will hire 234 autism specialists, 3,145 teachers for those with speech impairments, and 435 teachers for those who are profoundly mentally handicapped. Because of these projections, an add-on certificate in special education will be advantageous for the Florida teacher.
