Colorado recently launched a landmark teacher evaluation system. The system requires that teachers must be evaluated once a year and at least half of that evaluation will be based on student achievement. The evaluation requirements also stipulate that the board of education define what it means for a teacher to be “effective.” Teachers who want to thrive under these new guidelines may need the support of additional professional development, which they can obtain through college and graduate courses. These courses will not only help teachers impact their students, but also can prepare them for additional areas of instruction. According to the U.S. Department of Education, some of the teacher shortage areas for Colorado during the 2011-2012 school year were English, special education, bilingual education, math, remedial reading and language arts, and world languages.

The certificates are offered online, so you can complete them in your own time.
