Alternative Teacher Certification Programs in Nebraska

Career switchers and recent college graduates who want to teach in Nebraska may be eligible to do so through the state’s Transitional Teaching Certificate. This route is available to candidates and school districts when a fully qualified applicant cannot be found for a position. Thus, candidates in shortage areas will have the best chance of achieving a transitional teaching certificate. In a U.S. Department of Education report, Nebraska reported teacher shortages for 2011-2012 in math, science, special education, foreign languages and other areas.

In 2008-2009, the last year for which the National Center for Alternative Certification had statistics, Nebraska issued 92 certificates to teachers entering the profession through alternate routes.

What do you need to qualify for the transitional teaching certificate? Nebraska requires a bachelor’s degree that includes at least 75 percent of coursework in a secondary field or subject endorsement area. Then the superintendent of the school district in which the candidate intends to teach must submit a written request for certification along with a plan for mentoring and supervising the candidate.

The candidate must complete a pre-teaching seminar and work with an approved higher education institute to develop a plan to complete credentialing.

Nebraska also offers the federally funded Transition to Teaching program in partnership with the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Coursework for this program is available on-campus or on-line. Participants in the on-line program also have the option of teaching full-time in a cooperating school district while completing their studies. No matter how the coursework is completed, participants must complete a semester of student teaching.
