The bad news? Idaho regularly ranks near the bottom of the list in terms of teacher pay within the state. The good news? The state has a long list of teacher shortage areas, and teachers in these areas are eligible for partial or full cancellation of their federal student loans. Idaho has shortages in many of the same areas that the rest of the country has been experiencing, such as science, English as a second language, and gifted student education. But, the state also lacks enough qualified art, drama, history, physical education, and elementary school teachers, to name a few.

A master's degree is one way to boost your salary. In Idaho, beginning teachers with a master's degree make around $2,000 more per year than those without the degree, as reported by the Idaho Department of Education.

Boise State University. Boise State offers master's programs in bilingual education, counseling, curriculum and instruction, leadership, educational technology, sports studies, and literacy. The school also offers graduate certificate programs that qualify students for teacher certification.

Idaho State University. Idaho State offers master's degrees in a number of areas, including in deaf education, music education, administration, and elementary education.

University of Idaho. The University of Idaho's graduate education programs are tailored for working professionals, with some classes offered during weekends or evenings, or online. Students can choose from master's programs in special education, physical education, and counseling, among others.
