To work as a certified teacher in New Mexico, you must have at least a bachelor's degree, along with a teaching portfolio and experience from a teaching internship. Teachers can also apply for certification with a master's degree in education. New Mexico requires many of its educational professionals to show proof of at least six hours of credit in teaching reading, so if you are hoping to be licensed in New Mexico, focusing at least two of your graduate classes on reading is a smart move. Because of its rich Native American heritage, teachers in New Mexico may also be hired to offer instruction in Native American culture and language, though certification in this coursework may have additional requirements.

At Eastern New Mexico University, students can earn the master's degree in education in general education and elementary education, among other specializations.
