It pays for teachers in the Palmetto State to get a master's degree. Having a master's degree is worth an extra $4,400 to a beginning teacher in South Carolina, while the degree nets more experienced teachers nearly $6,000 in extra pay per year. Teacher salaries vary by district, but the state average is $47,050, according to the South Carolina non-profit Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention & Advancement.

South Carolina is one of a number of states where legislators have discussed switching to merit pay, which would base teacher pay on student performance. But for now, at least, the state still pays its teachers according to education level and years of experience.

The state is facing critical shortages of teachers in a number of areas, so job hunters with the right qualifications may be in luck. South Carolina doesn't have enough qualified people to teach agriculture, business, dance, English, family/consumer science, foreign language, health, industrial technology, math, science, special education, and theatre.
