A bachelor's degree and teaching certificate may be enough to get you started teaching in Michigan, but they're not enough to maintain a long-term career. Unless they receive an extension, Michigan teachers have six years to earn the professional education certificate, which requires 18 hours of study after the teacher's bachelor's degree. Because most graduate programs only require 30 credit hours, and earning a master's degree can help a teacher earn the professional certificate faster, graduate school is a wise choice for most of the state's teachers. Earning a master's degree and obtaining additional endorsements and credentials can also boost experienced Michigan teachers' paychecks by around $20,000 in some districts.

The University of Michigan offers a number of graduate programs designed to help teachers move up in or change their educational careers. The University, located in Ann Arbor, includes programs in everything from assessment and digital media to master's programs that partner with the Peace Corps and Teach for America. Like the University of Michigan, Michigan State University in East Lansing also offers a wide variety of programs, which include research-focused degrees and degrees in nontraditional areas, like Health Professions Education. This school has both online and part-time programs for working students. Finally, Northern Michigan University in Marquette features a number of endorsements and certificates for educators, such as those in reading, teaching English as a second language, and early childhood, as well as a graduate program in Education Administration. The university offers assistanceships, which include tuition waivers and pay.
