Virginia is in need of English teachers. Not only has the United States Department of Education listed English teachers as one of the positions in demand in the state, but also statewide testing shows that Virginia's English students are currently underachieving. Although the state met its adequate yearly progress goals for all students in English; black, Hispanic, economically disadvantaged, limited English and special education students did not make adequate yearly progress in English during the 2010-2011 school year. If you are licensed to teach in another area but feel you can make a difference as an English teacher, you should consider an add-on certificate.

At George Mason University, teachers can earn an advanced certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), an add-on certificate in English as a Second Language (ESL), and a certification in secondary education for English as a Second Language instruction. Virginia teachers who want more specialized English training can earn an add-on certificate in Literacy and Culture from Longwood University. The certificate will prepare them for Virginia reading specialist positions. The university also offers certificate programs in special education, autism, and 21st century learning & leadership. Finally, Sweet Briar College offers add-on certificate programs in special education and gifted education.
