According to a 2006 report by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Idaho schools need more special education teachers. The report noted that special education positions had been the hardest to fill and that the state needs teachers who can help special education students improve on state assessments. The special education certificate program at Lewis-Clark State College is designed to help would-be special education teachers obtain knowledge on special education in general. The program is highly individualized, allowing you plenty of personal time with a mentor. Teachers who already have master's degrees may be able to seek a special education endorsement from Northwest Nazarene University. The program prepares students to teach in the general special education classroom and offers the generalist certification. Finally, Boise State University - which educated close to 1500 of the elementary and 1200 of the secondary teachers in Idaho schools during the 2008-2009 school year - offers special education as well as a number of other add-on certificates. Many of Boise State's programs can be completed online.
