About Widener University - Online

Widener University, founded in 1821, is a private, doctoral-granting university located in Chester, Pennsylvania, 14 miles south of Center City Philadelphia. Widener enrolls 6,500 students at its main campus and at its satellite campuses in Chester, Exton and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as well as in Wilmington, Delaware. Most students come from the Philadelphia area. The university offers liberal arts and sciences as well as professional programs, which lead to associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Undergraduate students may choose from 40 academic majors and three pre-professional programs. Students at Widener enjoy a rich campus life, and have many sports, clubs and activities in which to participate.

Teacher Education at Widener University

Widener University’s Center for Education offers a number of undergraduate degree programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. Students may choose from the following programs: Elementary Education and Special Education. The Early Years (Grades PK-4); and Elementary Education: The Middle Years (Grades 4-8). Curriculum includes foundation courses in the corresponding subject area, professional education courses, field experiences, and a semester of student teaching. Students wishing to become certified to teach at the secondary level (grades 7-12) choose a major in the College of Arts and Sciences and take education courses offered by the Center for Education.
