About Michigan State University Online

The Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) at Michigan State University (MSU) is a fully online program for current and aspiring foreign language teachers. Housed within MSU's Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA), this program focuses on communicative and task-based language teaching principles and methods, as well as technology in language teaching, integration of language and culture, proficiency assessment, and program administration. Through online instruction and collaboration with faculty and peers, students in the program receive a solid foundation in second language acquisition (SLA) and applied linguistics, and learn how SLA theories and research apply to current foreign language teaching approaches, methods, and materials design.

MAFLT students teach a wide range of target languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish. Most are currently employed as teachers and tutors, and we are able to customize their coursework and final projects to meet their needs and expand their skills, perspectives, and potential as language educators. The program offers a high degree of interactivity in coursework and in personal advising and mentoring sessions.
