The University of West Alabama
Located in Livingston, AL, and home to roughly 5,000 students, the University of Alabama was chartered in 1835 as Livingston Female Academy and State Normal College and functioned largely as a teacher training institute. Academic degrees are awarded through four colleges, two divisions, and the School of Graduate Studies. In addition, the University offers several dual degree programs in allied health, engineering, and business, and a number of pre-professional programs. The University offers 12 Division II men’s and women’s sports that compete in the Eastern Division of the Gulf South Conference; students may also choose from an array of intramural sports, religious organizations, clubs, and other groups.
Teacher Education at The University of West Alabama
The University of West Alabama College of Education offers both undergraduate and graduate programs designed to prepare students for a career in education. Programs include early childhood, elementary, high school, and preschool through 12th grade certification, and professional education courses designed to help students earn certification in a number of secondary school subjects. In-service education is available for area teachers, including technical skills training and curriculum improvement. There are several scholarships available for education majors at the University of West Alabama, which also offers Master of Education degrees and a Non-Traditional Fifth Year program for those with non-teaching degrees who wish to transition into teaching.
