Stephen F. Austin State University
Founded as a teacher's college in 1923, Stephen F. Austin State University is one of four "independent" public universities in Texas that provides education designed to enhance a close-knit educational community where mutual respect and teamwork are celebrated. Located in Nacogdoches, the school is named for one of Texas' founding fathers, with the main campus situated on the site of the homestead of Thomas Jefferson Rusk, another founding father.
The University's mission is "to provide students a foundation for success, a passion for learning and a commitment to responsible global citizenship in a community dedicated to teaching, research, creativity and service."
SFA is known for offering quality bachelor's and master's degree programs instructed by professors with years of both hands-on and research-driven experience in their respective fields. Stephen F. Austin State University is ranked in the first tier among the best regional public and private universities in the western United States, according to the 2011 edition of "Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report.

Accreditation
Stephen F. Austin State University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS-1866 Southern Lane, Decatur, Georgia 30033-4097; Telephone number 404.679.4501; www.sacscoc.org) to award degrees at the Baccalaureate, Master's and Doctoral levels.
The James I. Perkins College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The SFA Early Childhood Laboratory is one of the first early childhood programs to earn accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the nation's leading organization of early childhood professionals.
