Norwich University
Founded in 1819 as the American Literary, Scientific and Military Academy, Norwich University is located three hours from Boston and Montreal in Northfield, VT and enrolls about 3,000 students. Its student population is primarily composed of a Corps of Cadets, as well as traditional students. Norwich is the oldest private military college in the nation, and is recognized by the U.S. Department of Defense as the "Birthplace of ROTC." The school offers 30 bachelor’s degrees, a teacher licensure program, and four ROTC programs. Athletic teams compete at the Division III level of the NCAA and are affiliated with four conferences, with the majority of teams competing in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
Teacher Education at Norwich University
Norwich University offers its students a Teacher Education Licensure program for students seeking licensure at the elementary or secondary majors. Interested students declare a minor in education/teacher licensure; elementary candidates typically choose psychology as a major, though other fields are open. Secondary candidates may seek licensure in English, mathematics, science, and social studies. Students spend one semester engaged in student teaching, as well as completing a special education seminar. Some students require a ninth semester to finish the program. Graduate are not only eligible to teach in Vermont, but may also apply for initial regular licensure in 47 other states through the Interstate Certification Project.
